Congratulations, you’re on the board! You have taken on an interesting and challenging role, one that can be very rewarding.
The members of your housing co-op have put great trust in you. They are depending on you to maintain their homes as safe and affordable places to live. Whether it is your first time on the board, or you have been re-elected, there is always something new to learn and to share.
In this workshop, we will cover:
- what makes a good board?
- roles and responsibilities of the board
- legal and financial responsibilities
- toolbox for effective meetings

Navigating conflict in co-ops
Wednesday, June 11, 9:30am – 4:30 pm
This interactive workshop will look at the foundational elements of conflict resolution with the intention of supporting participants to resolve conflict easily, efficiently, and skillfully throughout their co-ops. Participants will gain relevant, applicable and immediately usable skills to manage day-to-day conflict conversations.
Special attention will be given to:
- defining conflict
- identifying the causes of conflict
- understanding the five styles when responding to conflict
- recognizing the risks of leaving conflict unresolved and knowing when to pause
- de-escalating emotional reactions

Co-operative Management Conference
Pre-conference sessions for co-op staff and managers
Emergency response planning: is your co-op ready? CHMA Certificate program half-credit course
Course Schedule: Tuesday, June 10 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Wednesday, June 11 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
Is your organization prepared for the unexpected such as a fire, flood, or elevator or power outages? Do you have a plan for when the unexpected occurs? This workshop will assist you in developing a plan for co-op managers and boards, so that your co-op is prepared in the event of a disaster, no matter how big or small. You will take home suggested templates and action plans suited to your co-op. This 2- day workshop qualifies as a half credit towards an elective for the new Co-op Housing Management Accreditation (CHMA). The cost of this course is $150 and will be added to your Co-op Management Conference registration fee.

Building maintenance for property managers CHMA Certificate Program course
Course schedule: May 16, 23 & 30 – 10:00 am- 1:00 pm – virtually / online sessions
Thursday, June 12 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm – in-person session
Friday, June 13 10:00 am – 4:30 pm – in-person session
In this course you will learn about residential building systems and maintenance needs. You will learn the principles of residential construction, how to reduce risk and maximize the efficiency and life expectancy of building components. We will also discuss how to manage life safety systems, contract management, and capital replacement programs in support of long-term asset management plans. You will gain a general understanding of the principles of multi-unit residential building construction and the various systems within those buildings such as the plumbing, electrical, HVAC, building envelope and fire safety systems. Considering the specifics of the membership context of housing co-operatives, emphasis will be placed on: · preventive maintenance · co-op policies related to building maintenance · repair/replacement of various building components · inspections, safety, compliance with regulatory requirements and contract administration. The cost of this course is $250 and will be added to your Co-op Management Conference registration fee. Registrants will receive course details in early May including instructions for completing some of the course work which will be due prior to the in-person sessions. Please be advised that there will be a written exam (closed book) on Friday June 13th.
