CELEBRATING CO-OP WEEK WITH NEWS AND VIDEOS FROM INTERNATIONAL CO-OP SUMMIT

Happy Co‑op Week! This years seven day celebration of all things co‑op runs from October 16 to 22.

In the lead up to this special week, over 2,900 co‑operators from around the world gathered last week at the Third International Summit of Co‑operatives in Quebec City. A truly inspiring gathering, the Summit puts into perspective the massive worldwide reach of co‑ops, with representatives from 115 countries in attendance.

Members of Co-operative Housing International met during the Summit. They discussed long-term economic sustainability and why co‑ops should look at refinancing. CHI Program Director Julie LaPalme says they also toured La Grand'Voile housing co‑op in the historic district of le Petit Champlain, the only co‑op in Quebec to become a 2020 co‑op. Thanks to Jocelyne Rouleau of CQCH and the co‑op's president, Mathilde Paul-Hus, for organizing the tour.

A group of CHF Canada staff and directors were lucky enough to attend the Quebec Summit. First-time summiter, CHF Canada Program Manager of Member Engagement Cynthia Mitchell, says she was impressed by how many eminent keynote speakers, from Joseph Stiglitz to Robert Reich, agreed that the time for co‑ops to shine is now!

To help spread the word, the International Co-operative Alliance launched a series of videos highlighting the co‑op difference in countries around the world. Check out the Canadian video and a recap video of the 2016 Summit.

HOUSING CO-OP MEMBER PAUL TINGLEY TAKES BRONZE AT RIO PARALYMPICS

Paul Tingley, a member of Torontos Local 75 (Hospitality Workers) Housing Co‑operative, was part of the Canadian sailing team that took a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

2016 marked Paul`s fifth time at the Paralympics: he won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and a bronze in Sydney in 2000.

Paul has been passionate about sports since childhood. He says freedom, fun, competition, travel, physics are the things he enjoys most about sailing. He also enjoys getting to leave his wheelchair, which he has used since a skiing accident at the age of 24, at the dock.

He has been a member of the Local 75 Co‑op since 2014, and says he loves the building, the people and the location. Local 75 is an 85-unit LEED Gold Certified building in downtown Toronto, built in 2010 in partnership with Toronto Community Housing, UNITE, the hospitality workers union, and CHFT. It was built to house hospitality workers and others displaced by the redevelopment of Regent Park. The strikingly designed building is also home to Hawthorne Food & Drink, a social enterprise training restaurant.

Sam Iceton, a coordinator with Homestarts who works at Local 75, commented: Local 75 Housing Co‑operative has been proud to call Paul Tingley a member of the community over the last few years. Paul has proven himself to be a valuable member of the co‑operative, and we could not be more proud of his achievements at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

While he doesnt plan to compete in the Paralympics again, Paul looks forward to giving back to his community through coaching youth in sailing.

NEW CHF CANADA STAFF INCLUDE NEW CO-OP HOUSING DEVELOPMENT POSITION

Sarah Pashaii has joined CHF Canada as the Administrative Assistant for Sector Development, working out of the Ottawa office. She describes her job as the glue that binds the CHF Canada vision! To this role, Sarah brings 15 years of experience in providing administrative support in both the private and nonprofit sectors. Shes especially proud of her experience in her early teens, working with NGOs as a youth spokesperson on children's rights. Sarah says she looks forward to seeing CHF Canada grow and seeing its vision carried out.

Anthony Perlingieri is CHF Canadas new Manager of Co‑operative Housing Development, working from the Ontario Region office in Toronto. Anthony has been tasked with exploring opportunities for the creation of new co‑op housing across the country through expansions, redevelopment and new development.

Before joining CHF Canada, he worked for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, where he was part of a team that worked on projects including the the $58 million Woodbine Redevelopment and the $92 million Windsor Energy Centre. Before OLG, he worked with GWL Realty Advisors, asset managing 6,000 apartment suites, refinancing 17 properties, and developing a new 141-suite apartment building in Toronto.

Anthony looks forward to the challenge of creating a development plan that will balance design, scope, schedule, and financing to create more co‑op communities.

As Karla Skoutajan, Director of Sector Development, puts it, The road ahead for co‑op housing development is full of potential. By hiring a development specialist well be able to properly explore development opportunities. Over the next few months, Anthony will learn about co‑op housing development already underway across the country. Then hell work on identifying new opportunities and co-ordinating resources to develop proposals and plans so our movement can continue to grow.
