Co-op Housing Sector Deputes at Toronto City Hall on Key Housing Report
Toronto, Ontario, June 25, 2015 – On Wednesday, June 24th, staff for the Co‑operative Housing Federation of Toronto (CHFT) and Co‑operative Housing Federation of Canada’s Ontario Region deputed at Toronto City Hall at the Community Development and Recreation Committee. The deputation was in response to the report by the City’s General Manager of Shelter, Support and Housing Administration entitled “Transforming Social Housing: Renewing the Partnership with the City’s Social Housing Providers”.
The report, which will be voted on by council in early July, calls on the federal government to reverse funding cuts and reinvest savings in affordable housing. It also looks at developing stronger partnerships with housing providers and makes recommendations for a capital repair strategy. Most importantly, the report highlights ongoing discussions between the City of Toronto and Toronto co‑ops on emergency, short-term actions for federal co‑ops facing the end of their operating agreement. As a result of these discussions, low-income co‑op members in federal co‑ops facing the end of their operating agreements will not be forced from their homes for the time being.
In their presentations, CHFT Executive Director Tom Clement and CHF Canada Ontario Region Managing Director Harvey Cooper expressed support for the report and thanked the City for their work on affordable housing issues particularly the emergency assistance contemplated for low-income members in federal co‑ops facing withdrawal of assistance from Ottawa. The Co‑op presenters were very well received by Councillors on the Committee who had a number of questions and made supportive comments about co‑operative housing in the discussion that ensued. The report passed with minor resolutions and will be voted on by council in early July.
