Housing co-op hosts Toronto Centre candidates
Toronto, Ontario, September 30, 2015 -In two years, October 1st, 2017, the Hugh Garner Housing Co‑op’s federal operating agreement ends. When it does, the low-income households (approximately half of the 181 units) will no longer receive a monthly subsidy to help pay their rent. Without governments creating a long-term solution, these households fear they will lose their homes, and their co‑op neighbours who pay market rent fear their community will never be the same.
Hugh Garner Co‑op is hosting a Meet the Candidates event on Thursday October 1st at 7pm. The candidates will have an opportunity to inform the public about their commitment to co‑ops and other affordable housing, and members will have an opportunity to ask questions.
Date: Thursday October 1st, 2015, 7-9 pm
Location: Hugh Garner Housing Co‑op, 550 Ontario Street, Toronto
- Colin Biggen, Green
- Linda McQuaig, NDP
- Bill Morneau, Liberal
Today, approximately 7,000 Ontario housing co‑op households depend on federal rent-geared-to-income (RGI) assistance to pay their rent. When the subsidies end, these vulnerable households could be uprooted from their good quality affordable co‑op homes, and the co‑ops will lose long-term members that contribute significantly to their vibrant, mixed-income communities. The funding necessary to maintain existing affordable co‑op homes is quite modest, estimated at $9.5 million over the next five years across Ontario.
