Toronto Liberal Candidates Tour Local Housing Co-op

Toronto, Ontario, September 21, 2015 – On Tuesday, September 22ndth, Toronto Liberal candidates Adam Vaughan (Spadina-Fort York) and Bill Morneau (Toronto Centre) will be touring Fieldstone Co‑operative Homes to discuss their expiring federal operating agreement and withdrawal of funds for their low-income members.

Today, approximately 7,000 Ontario housing co‑op households depend on federal rent-geared-to-income (RGI) assistance to pay their rent. When the subsidies end, these vulnerable households could be uprooted from their good quality affordable co‑op homes, and the co‑ops will lose long-term members that contribute significantly to their vibrant, mixed-income communities. The federal government has made no commitment to continue the funding, while the NDP, Liberal and Green Parties have vowed to ensure rent supplements continue.

The federal funding necessary to maintain existing affordable co‑op homes is quite modest, estimated at $9.5 million over the next five years across Ontario.

When: Tuesday, September 21, 2015 at 11:00am EST

Who: Federal Liberal Candidates for Toronto:

  • Adam Vaughan, Spadina Fort York
  • Bill Morneau, Toronto Centre

Where: Fieldstone Co‑operative Homes, 135 Bleecker Street, Toronto

“Recognizing that keeping people in their communities by maintaining rent supplements is one of the most affordable and effective ways to fight the growth of poverty in Ontario, we are glad to see the opposition parties are committed to ensuring low-income households can remain in their homes.”

Harvey Cooper, Managing Director, Co‑operative Housing Federation of Canada- Ontario Region

“Low-income people are facing losing their homes if they receive no government assistance. Seniors, families, and the disabled may find themselves without housing. They will be forced to go on the social housing waiting list, which means they will not be housed in this decade.”

Tom Clement, Executive Director, Co‑operative Housing Federation of Toronto
