As we mark Black History Month, we recognize the enduring strength, leadership, and community-building legacy of African Nova Scotian communities, which we see reflected in Compass Nova Scotia Co-operative Homes (Compass NS)’ newest neighbourhood, Unity North Neighbourhood.
When Unity North Neighbourhood opened last year, it brought 57 new at-cost homes to Halifax’s North End. But Unity North Neighbourhood is more than housing. It has laid the foundation for a lasting, people-centred community. It is one that reclaims a neighbourhood impacted by the historic displacement of African Nova Scotian residents and redefines what it means to truly live in community.
Compass NS partnered with local organization Man Up to engage the community. By prioritizing membership in the new co-op for African Nova Scotian applicants who lived in or had lived in the area, Unity North Neighbourhood is welcoming people home. By amplifying the voices of African Nova Scotians with historic and cultural ties to the neighbourhood, Unity North now plays an essential role providing affordable homes and strengthening community connection.
