CHF Canada has been hard at work advocating for investments to grow and support housing co-ops. This week, we released our submissions on the 2023 Federal Budget and 2023 Ontario Budget.
Our Ontario budget submission outlines our recommendations for how to create more co-op homes as a solution to the housing crisis, ramp up programs to support existing housing co-ops, and support Indigenous-led housing solutions.
2023 Ontario Budget Pre-Budget Submission
TIME FOR ACTION: Solving Ontario’s affordable housing crisis
Our Ontario budget submission outlines three key recommendations for the provincial government:
- CREATE AT LEAST 99,000 permanently affordable co-op and non-profit homes. Ontario needs to take a leadership role in addressing the affordable housing crisis and significantly increase the number of co-op and non-profit homes.
- ENSURE the new Service and Exit Agreement framework for co-ops and non-profits delivers on providing better homes and a more efficient system. Half of the co-ops in Ontario will reach the End of Mortgage over the next ten years. The provincial government needs to ensure these co-ops are able to continue to provide affordable housing for future generations.
- DEVELOP and FULLY FUND a for-Indigenous, by-Indigenous urban, rural, and northern housing strategy for Ontario. A fully funded strategy is needed to address the housing disparity experienced by Indigenous people and the lasting impacts of racism, colonialism, and intergenerational trauma.
