Fact Sheet: Privacy and confidentiality do’s and don’ts for housing co-operatives

Use this list of privacy and confidentiality do’s and don’ts for housing co-ops. While it was written with Ontario laws in mind, it provides practical advice for any co-op to follow. If in doubt, please check your provincial privacy legislation. (2018)

Provincial and Territorial Acts

Know that each province and territory has its own public-sector privacy legislation. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have their own private-sector privacy legislation.

The following provinces and territories do not have specific private sector privacy legislation, instead Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)  applies in these regions: Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
