Co-ops: a model of resiliency

We’re dealing with real challenges and trade problems like never before. People, businesses, and organizations in Canada are facing uncertainty at new levels because of tariffs, global conflicts, and domestic political changes. In challenging times, history has shown us that resilience is built through co-operation. Now, more than ever, we need to support each other in uncertain times. CHF Canada and the co-operative housing sector are proof that when we work together, we create sustainable, community-first solutions to withstand the toughest external storms. We will continue to advocate for policies that build stability and create a future where everyone can thrive. We will continue to support our members through education and services that ensure housing co-ops thrive and can offer good quality, stable and affordable communities for decades to come.  

CHF Canada will continue to advocate for solutions that will make an impact, particularly for low- and moderate-income households. A sector-led acquisition fund will stabilize rental housing options and enable co-op and non-profits to purchase rental properties that are for sale to protect tenants. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with Indigenous housing leaders to see an Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy fully funded to meet the needs of Indigenous households. And we’ll continue to work with partners to build significantly more co-op homes across the country. While south of the border, mega-corporations abandon climate and equity commitments, we will stay the course on climate leadership, Truth and Reconciliation, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.   

Co-operatives are resilient because of our established commitment to mutual aid and solidarity. Canada’s co-ops are among our most resilient form of affordable housing. We’ve faced big challenges before, and now, we must come together to protect the economic security of co-op households, our sector, and Canadian communities. With your support, we have the means to collectively promote co-operative identity, sustainability, and growth. Co-operation is the key to navigating uncertainty.
