The Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada is recruiting for a full time (35 hours per week), permanent position of Manager, Communications and Marketing starting as soon as possible. The preferred position location is Ottawa (hybrid) or Toronto (hybrid). Other locations may be considered.

The mission of the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada) is to inspire, represent and serve our members in a united co-operative housing movement. There is significant unmet demand for affordable and co-operative housing, and we want more people to experience the security, vibrancy and resiliency of co-operative living. We work with federal, provincial/territorial and municipal governments to support existing co-ops, and to develop more co-op housing, so we can continue to lead the way in creating inclusive, accessible, diverse and sustainable communities. Our movement is resourceful, passionate, and dedicated to a future with more co-operative housing.

The Manager, Communications and Marketing develops and oversees the delivery of CHF Canada’s communications and marketing programs, including priorities from the strategic plan.  This includes member-focused communications and marketing initiatives in support of CHF Canada’s programs, in addition to externally oriented strategic communications. The Manager provides strategic advice to senior management and leads communications activities that ensure a high level of awareness of the unique identity and value of housing co-operatives, and that support CHF Canada’s advocacy to governments.

The Manager leads a small team (1-2), while engaging outside consultants as needed.  The Manager works collaboratively as part of the Public Affairs team, while providing support as needed to other teams within the organization.

The Manager develops and executes communication plans to strengthen and grow CHF Canada’s advocacy initiatives, as well as services and programs that it provides for its members, which includes, but is not limited to, the CHF Canada Annual Meeting.

The Manager is responsible for CHF Canada’s print and digital publications and presence, including maintaining and growing traffic to the CHF Canada website and social media channels, alongside developing or supporting other digital activities, such as online advocacy campaigns, promotional materials for internal and external audiences, including national and regional newsletters, mobile displays and the annual report.

The Manager is responsible for managing the content and design of CHF Canada’s website and social media channels in support of member needs and strategic objectives, working with other staff and outside contractors as needed.

The Manager oversees collaboration between CHF Canada communications staff and communications staff from other organizations whose strategic and communications goals are complementary to CHF Canada’s.

The Manager writes compelling and context appropriate speeches for co-operative housing representatives as required.

The Manager develops key messages in support of CHF Canada programs, services and advocacy objectives to assist staff and co-operative housing sector representatives.

The Manager directs media enquiries within CHF Canada and supports the Director, Public Affairs and Policy in developing and maintaining effective contacts with representatives of the news media, including regional media.

The Manager monitors media coverage of co-operative housing throughout Canada, writes text for media releases and letters to the editor, and provides advice and guidance to CHF Canada’s members in their efforts to promote positive coverage of co-operative housing in the media.

CHF Canada employee benefits include employer paid premiums for Group Benefits (health, dental, life insurance AD&D), pension, an annual wellness benefit and a one-time hybrid allowance payment.

  • A university degree in communications, journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of experience in marketing, communications or similar field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including plain-language writing skills and the ability to write for various target audiences and platforms.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
