St Charles Co-operative Homes: 30-year loyalty award

In 2021, St. Charles Co-operative Homes in Welland, ON, received a Member Loyalty Award for 30 years of CHF Canada membership.

St. Charles Co-operative Homes consists of an apartment building with one and two bedroom homes, and has two, three and four bedroom townhomes. The co-op received municipal funding to do some substantial repairs to the property. The townhouses had their foundations and waste water systems repaired due to settling, which also meant new sidewalks and new sod, giving these homes a refreshed and attractive curb appeal.

The Board of St. Charles co-op are diligent and thorough in governing the co-op. They receive training regularly at federation events, and they are very supportive of their manager. Board members always review financial statements and come to meetings prepared for work. At the outset of the pandemic, the Board agreed to be empathetic with members whose income had suffered, so they instituted generous and affordable repayment plans for those in difficulty, and stopped charging late fees for housing charges.

Over the years, members have created support systems that work for their community. The apartment building houses mostly seniors, and they have some routines for helping each other out with shopping, appointments and errands. COVID-19 information has been kept up to date throughout the pandemic and all members have been updated regularly with local restrictions and best practises to stay safe.
