Good turnouts and dialogue at education events in Winnipeg and Saskatoon

On Saturday, April 27, close to 40 co-op housing members and managers attended CHF Canada’s Education Event in Winnipeg.
This full day event included workshops on annual budgets, social media and strategic planning. There were also discussions of the possibility of an early Manitoba election call and concern around the status of Manitoba as one of the few holdouts on signing a bilateral deal on housing with the federal government. A Future of Social Housing panel discussion featured Manitoba Non Profit Housing Association, Right to Housing, and the Canadian Community Economic Development Network which highlighted the need for strong advocacy in the coming days.
Co-op member and former CHF Canada Director representing Aboriginal Communities, Linda Campbell, said she really liked the Lego Serious Play methodology.
“Visuals are a great teaching tool and the Lego blocks represented diversity,” said Linda. “Every participant was able to share their thoughts, visions, concerns, wants and needs as co-op members. The grouping of what we build and how the facilitators set up the co-op needs was a real eye opener.”
And at the Saskatoon Education Event on May 4, eight participants representing two housing co-ops gathered for a session on conducting Staff Evaluations and another on Confidentiality. There was also an informal discussion about the recent bilateral agreement signed by Saskatchewan and the need to actively follow up on recent engagement with government on how this rolls out for co-ops. Rainbow, Crestview and Argyle Park were all in communication with MLAs in the days leading up to signing of the bilateral agreement.
