CHF Canada and United Way Greater Toronto release a bold, actionable housing blueprint

Earlier today, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada) and United Way Greater Toronto launched a groundbreaking new report: Built for Good: Delivering the Housing Ontario Needs.

At a time when housing affordability is reaching crisis levels, Built for Good offers a powerful, practical plan to eliminate core housing need in Ontario by 2035, a goal that’s bold, but achievable.

Built for Good outlines a scalable, delivery-ready, and costed plan centred on non-profit and co-op housing, one that’s aligned with Ontario’s goal to build 1.5 million homes.

With a two-year investment of $16.7 billion, the plan could:

• Create 185,150 new units of deeply affordable homes – 15,150 new units and 170,000 portable benefits for low-income households
• Keep 65,000 existing homes affordable through acquisition and repair; and
• Develop 8,250 new moderately affordable homes.

This is a smart economic investment. Every $1 spent on affordable housing construction generates $1.52 in GDP, while supportive housing reduces public costs by $21.72 for every $10 invested. It also creates thousands of good jobs in construction and skilled trades.

Ontario faces a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine its housing system. We have the know-how, the land, the partners, and the urgent need. Now, we need the province to step up and act.
