Black History Month: Unity North

Published February 20, 2026

“Progression” by Leticia Adams and Mark Maestro is a collaboration with Compass NS and 902 Man Up to capture the historical perspective and diversity of the Maitland Street project.

As we mark Black History Month, we recognize the enduring strength, leadership, and community-building legacy of African Nova Scotian communities, which we see reflected in the newest housing co-operative in Nova Scotia, Unity North.

When Unity North opened last year, it brought 57 new affordable homes to Halifax’s North End. But Unity North is more than housing. It has laid the foundation for a lasting, people-centred community. It is one that reclaims a neighbourhood impacted by the historic displacement of African Nova Scotian residents and redefines what it means to truly live in community.

The developer Compass Nova Scotia partnered with local organization Man Up to engage the community. By prioritizing membership in the new co-op for African Nova Scotian applicants who lived in or had lived in the area, Unity North is welcoming people home. By amplifying the voices of African Nova Scotians with historic and cultural ties to the neighbourhood, Unity North now plays an essential role providing affordable homes and strengthening community connection.
