Let’s Build a Better Future Together
Published May 05, 2025
The Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada offers warm congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election, and to all members elected to the 45th Parliament.
Canadian housing co-operatives look forward to working with the Government of Canada to advance real and lasting solutions to Canada’s housing crisis. Working together, we can deliver more co-operative housing in communities across the country, so that more Canadians have secure, affordable homes in strong and inclusive communities. In uncertain times, investing in co-op housing provides real dividends through jobs created today, in homes that last forever.
In the lead-up to this election, the collective energy and advocacy of co-op housing members and supporters across the country was palpable. In a short campaign period, our members mobilized under the Build Co-op Housing, Build a Better Future campaign to ensure that co-op housing was part of the election conversation.
Going forward, we will continue to advocate to:
- Build more co-op housing with dedicated federal investment.
- Protect renters from rent hikes, renovictions and other displacements by enabling rental buildings to be purchased and converted to co-ops.
- Commit significant investment to develop co-op and non-profit housing for Indigenous households in urban, rural and northern communities, developed by and for those communities.
- Ensure existing and new co-ops can offer mixed-income housing by providing rental assistance for low-income co-op members.
Our campaign saw participation nationwide, with outreach to many local candidates. We are excited to build on this momentum and work with the new government. Together, we can help ensure more Canadians have access to the kind of homes and communities they need and deserve.
